I loved the whole Nappy Free/EC process so much I made a film about it, called Nappy Free! It's available directly from me at Moorepictures2@gmail.com or at Natureschild.com.au Now my kids (6&4)are completely finished with all of this, and I get to reap the rewards of them having such healthy self esteem, open communication, and no inhibitions or taboos around toiletting or genitalia...

Very well written article, indeed! I heard about EC when my first was about 6 months, and love the attention and closeness it requires you to have with your children. Not that I can say we successfully EC'd our children, but we tried, and all you can do is enough. Now my son, 4, is still having trouble staying dry at night but I REFUSE to buy those night diapers for older kids, I'd rather wash his sheets every day. I found my old cloth diapers and forced him to wear them one or two nights, now he is waking up to pee so I call that success! It's happened before, and then regressed, so I'm not holding my breath, but I'm enjoying him sleeping with us for the remainder of the night whenever he gets up to pee.

I'm currently reading the book "diaper free" by Ingrid Bauer and am really excited to start using this with my first baby due in 5 weeks.
The thought of using nappies kind of grosses me out, I can't imagine having my child sitting in its own mess while waiting to be changed.
Thank goodness the old cultural ways are becoming more accepted in western society

Hi Tracey, It is possible to begin ECing at 12 months and I think it’s worthwhile at any age. The most important part about EC is the communication part and you have probably been doing that with your baby already e.g. when changing a nappy saying things like “You’ve done a wee, your nappy is wet, lets get a dry one on you.” There are some great tips for late starters at Tribal Baby Org website (details at the end of the above article) and the book Diaper Free by Ingrid Bauer also goes into this.

[...] If you want to reduce nappy usage even further, you may like to begin early pottying with your baby – something you can do right from birth. This is called elimination communication or infant potty training and takes advantage of the fact that babies are aware of their elimination right from birth. By responding to your baby’s squirms and fussiness and offering them a potty or other alternative, you will reduce nappy use and many people find that their babies are completely toilet trained during their second year (rather than into their third or fourth as is the case for many disposible nappy wearing toddlers), thus reducing both resource usage and waste.
