I bought and read this book.

He has some good ideas, though has no medical background.

I didn't appreciate his evidence against being vegan was him doing a "Vision Quest" and the fact that all he wanted was a turkey sandwich. Not the most sound evidence.

Another suspicious point was you either have to eat fish heads or buy one supplement that he names by brand name.

Another thing he doesn't mention on his website is that instead of fixing cavities, he'd rather leave his daughters front teeth shiny and black. The psychological damage of being stared at might not be worth it.

I’m a single mom and I have 2 kids who both needed braces. I make just enough to not qualify Medicaid services. I had to pay over $4800 so that my child can have braces and a beautiful smile. . .She was very scared and timid at school. I couldn’t find anyone in Los Angeles who would do the braces at a normal price so I had to launch find it with free services like
http://www.healthsouk.com (HealthSouk) and www.1800dentist.com (800 dentist) The first one was free and the second apparently charges the dentist but not me.

I have question..my little niece has two cavities in her teeth and she is complaining of pain. The last time I took her she had two other teeth filled. Right now I am so tight on money that any remedy would help? I can see the dark markings in her teeth. I have limited juice and sugar intake. She drinks plenty of water...Any advice to cure it possibly naturally?

There is sadly a lot of superstitious nonsense about flouride. Pace Lilian Lee, not all dentists are at the mercy of the pharmas or any other industry. And there are dental researchers. And they really are able to work free of industry influence. I had one such as my father. He was not keen on industry or the pharmas - though he saw the latter as a necessary evil. He was not keen on chemicals to love problems of human behavior: thought that the food industry was a big part of the problems of dental health. Talked about "sucroholia", addiction to sugar. But he was also a realist and a scientist. In other words, his mind was not closed, he waited for the evidence before making up his mind. And one thing he was convinced about was the value of flouridation. Because it reduced dental decay, and therefore the need for dental interventions, and because that was of great benefit for the large numbers of people who cannot afford dental work. Yes, sodium flouride is a by-product of industry; yes, it is poisonous and used as rat poison. So what. Anything in the wrong quantity is deadly (eg that dangerous hydrated oxygen aka water). Many natural foods contain poisons eg arsenic in almonds. Flouridation uses very low doses, you can drink as much as physically you can without getting anything near a dangerous dose, and it is mimicking a natural phenomenon.

It is sad when well motivated people hit on an answer ("flouride is bad") and bend their efforts, and the truth, to try to prove that outcome. Do the work, examine the evidence without bias, and accept that life is not full of evil conspiracy.

I ran across this page online and would like to add a comment.

I grew up on standard dentistry, using fluoride toothpastes, and getting my teeth drilled and filled. None of it helped, because I was eating the typical American sugar-garbage-dead-milk diet. I got a mouthful of mercury fillings.

Fifteen years ago I got sick of it. I stopped brushing and flossing. I switched to raw milk and raw eggs. I stopped eating all grains. I lost 30 pounds in a few months. I felt ten years younger.

Last month (June 2011) I went to a dentist because after fifteen years, I thought I'd better get my teeth checked, because it had been so long. The dental technician told me she had never seen such wonderful teeth and said it was obvious I was taking great care of them, I must be spending several minutes a day brushing and cleaning them. I said no, sorry, I haven't brushed in years. (I wipe them every couple of days with a cloth with a little Dr. Bronner's soap on it, for a few seconds.) I had ZERO new cavities in those fifteen years since I stopped brushing and flossing. Why? Because I'm eating a healthy diet full of healthy fats... raw whole organic milk, raw butter, raw eggs. And avoiding the junk that harms your teeth.

BTW, when I saw the dentist fifteen years ago, before I ditched dentists, he told me I had two small cavities. Now I have none. They have not been filled. They healed.

I understood the essential point made by Price was to do with minerals in the diet affecting the calcium to phosphorus ratio in the blood which was achieved by the intake of vegetables, meat that was not overcooked and no sugary processed food.

Hi!
I am a dental hygienist myself and find this debate very interesting. I think there is some truth to the info given by the author of this article but also in the root of scientific dental research. Diet and nutrition have a HUGE part in prevention of decay for sure. However, it has been proven that certain bacteria are responsible for tooth decay. There are specific bacteria that are also responsible for periodontal disease (it is a bacterial infection that can be exacerbated with poor nutrition/smoking/supressed immune system, etc). These bacterias are passed from person to person and usually introduced from family members (sharing utensils/kissing/etc).

Sugars and acids feed the bacteria that cause decay and create cavities when they produce acid and drop the saliva's ph (long/compliacated process that has many factors-won't get into it). If the lesion has not gone through the enamel and into the underlying dentin it is possible that the decay can be halted via our own saliva and the minerals in it. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that comes from corn cobs, birch bark and other things-even made in our own body. It helps raise the pH of our saliva and is not a usuable form of sugar by the decay causing bacteria and therefore reduces these bacteria/raises the pH level of saliva after sugar/acid attack and prevents decay.

April (previous post) has some very good facts in her post. It doesn't mean that she is totally wrong nor is necessarily anyone else. There are many good points to many of the posts here. I think it's important to realize that there may be more than one truth or different studies to show different outcomes. It's just like the area of nutrition. It can be a fledgling science at times. What is good in nutrition isn't always good for the next. There are truths to many different diets and each person needs to listen to their body and choose food on how their body reacts and how they feel after eating certain foods. It's called bioindividuality. Good DIET and BEVERAGE choices along with preventative measures such as flossing and brushing to reduce bacteria and food matter from sitting on your teeth are most important thing to realize here. That is something I think everyone can agree on. It helps prevent decay and periodontal disease both. Good diet choices provide things like calcium and phosphate (our teeth are made up of this) and it hangs around in our saliva and helps with the remineralization process of teeth (when they undergo sugar/acid attack -which happens all day long). This is partly how teeth remineralize and stop/arrest beginning or incipient decay. And yes, there are products that have been put on the market that help with the remineralization process, especially for those who don't have a good diet and have waaay too much sugars in their diet and don't plan to change habits. There is a product that contains calcium, phosphate and fluoride (also a fluoride free version as well) that gives a big boost of these minerals in a form that is bioavailable to the teeth to utilize. For those who don't choose to reduce sugars/acidic foods and beverages, it really really helps. We have had several people who have decay each time they come to the dental office reduce the amount of decay and actually reverse very beginning decay (that has not gone into dentin) where it is no longer visible on xrays a year later. REMEMBER, once decay has gone through the enamel into the inner layer of the tooth the decay spreads much much faster and at that point really needs to be restored to avoid infection of the nerve or abcess.
When I entered the dental field, I had no idea how controversial dental topics could be. I don't always agree with the products etc or treatments that are recommended in the dental field...but I apply it case by case and what the patient is dealing with. I think there are many more natural ways to deal with things in many cases, but some need a little extra help that I have only found through traditional treatments. I often try to recommend natural ways for people to improve their dental health if I feel that it is manageable in this way.
Anyhow, the topic could go on and on...instead I will just say: eat well, brush, floss and take good care of your entire body. The mouth is a gateway to the rest of your body...take good care of it. Problems in the body can be reflected in your mouth!
